I have tried it and it is one of cultural dishes in Estonia. It originates from Southern Estonia and can be made with meat or without. As most Estonians were peasants, their food was often made with whatever they could grow or afford and was hearty. And so this dish kinda represents the average Estonian peasant/modern cuisine using ingredients which are easy to find here.

Ingredients

  • 8-10 big potatoes

  • 1 L water for boiling

  • 1-1.5 dl of pearl barley

  • Salt

  • 300-500 g of pork flank (optional, if you're vegan or vegetarian)

  • 1-2 onions (white ones)

Preparation

  1. Peel the potatoes, cut them up if they're too big (they'll cook faster) and put them into a pot with pearl barley and cold water. Boil until potatoes and barley are soft. After remove excess water (but you can keep a bit) and mash it all together.

  2. Cut the meat into smaller cubes and fry them with chopped onion. Don't forget to add salt to everything.

Serving: place the mashed potato-barley mix onto a plate and put the meat cubes with onions on top.
