Assamese, the official language of Assam in India, is spoken by around 15 million people. Closely related to Bengali, it is written in the Bengali-Assamese script, an abugida. Assamese grammar is highly inflected, with an agglutinative structure, numerous cases, and rich verbal conjugations. The language has a vibrant literary tradition and plays a central role in Assamese cultural identity, expressed in its folk songs, dance forms like Bihu, and extensive poetic heritage.
