Marathi is spoken by around 96 million people, primarily in the Indian state of Maharashtra, where it is an official language. Part of the Indo-European family, Marathi is written in the Devanagari script, an abugida. It features fusional grammar with two cases, three genders, and an SOV word order. Marathi has a rich literary tradition, including ancient texts and modern novels, and it plays a significant role in regional politics, arts, and cinema.
